Pretty Good: A newsletter for generalists, by a generalist
Our society loves to reward people for being extremely good at one specific thing. But it’s far more practical to be pretty good at lots of things. That’s what I celebrate, with weekly posts about navigating the big and small challenges of adulthood. Join me and let’s get Pretty Good at all kinds of stuff.
Social Distancing Baseball League
The SDBL is a project launched in cooperation with Rory Murphy to promote safe practices in these uncertain times, provide entertainment to baseball fans, and progress the cause of helping people in need. A 28-person online baseball video game league, the SDBL began in March, 2020 and donated $1,000 to Capital Area Food Bank through entry fees from its player pool. A second season began in May, 2020, donating an additional $600+ to various charitable organizations.
Press about the SDBL:
- Forbes: “For those of us missing the game, these digital tilts have helped fill the void for a spell. For those struggling with hunger, hopefully they can accomplish a bit more.”
- Baseball Prospectus (by the author): “We’ve done everything we can to say yes to every good idea that’s been proposed. That so many other people said yes in turn to participating in this weird little community speaks, I think, to the chord it struck.”
- The Athletic: “When Rory Murphy recently organized a retro video game league as a fundraiser, he needed a game that would be easy to play. He found an answer in Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball.”
I Think I Like This Movie (Podcast)
Co-host, producer #ITILTM
Along with fellow co-host Will Vitka and a guest, we revisit a movie that at least one participant hasn’t watched in 10+ years but thinks they liked — not a classic, not a bomb — and that at least one participant hasn’t watched at all to see how well it holds up. It’s America’s least necessary film criticism podcast.
